Navigation Course
Now You're Ready to Chart Your Course with Navigation!
Next Dates for this 2-day Classroom Course:
November 5 and November 19, 2005.
Whether you've just completed Basic Hands-On Sailing or
you have been sailing for years, you know how important it is to know where you
are going. The 12-hour Navigation course teaches you all the
navigational techniques you need to sail safely in coastal or inland waters -
anywhere!
Topics include:
-
Electronic Navigation: proper use of Global
Positioning Satellites (GPS)
-
Charts: learn to read US nautical charts and
understand the symbols and conventions they contain
-
Tide and Current Tables: use of tables to determine
changes in sailing conditions and how to steer taking into account known
current and leeway
-
Use of Compass: conversion of course and bearing
between true, magnet and compass. Checking compass deviation by means
of a transit bearing
-
Plotting Position and Courses: using terrestrial
objects, such as bearings on two objects at the same time or one object at
various times, a bearing in combination with a sounding or transit range,
etc
-
Instruments Needed for Navigation: course will cover
use of steering compass and deviation table, handbearing compass,
binoculars, protractor, depth sounder, dividers, log/knotmeter, etc.
If you want a better understanding of navigation techniques and
regulations, or would like to plot a sailing course to a new destination, this
is the class for you!
The two-day Navigation course is offered each Spring and
Fall, over two Saturdays, from 9:00am - 4:00pm each day. Navigation is
a classroom course taught by experienced USCG captains, whose sea tales and
experiences make the theory come alive. Like all Croton Sailing School
courses, Navigation offers American Sailing Association (ASA) certification.

"We are glad we took your navigation course as last week we sat in fog with
no land in site. It's the first time that happened - a real trip!
Thanks for helping us find our way back."
